Zurich Airport to St. Anton: Taxi, Train or Bus? (2026 Guide)

The fastest door-to-door option from Zurich Airport to St. Anton am Arlberg is a private taxi transfer: 200 km, around 2h 20min, from €475 per vehicle (not per person), with all tolls and the Arlberg Tunnel included. The train takes 3–3.5 hours with a change at Zurich HB and costs €55–80 per person — a good option for solo travellers with light luggage. There is no practical direct bus service.

Here's the honest comparison, plus the winter traffic knowledge our drivers have built up on this route since 1998.

Your three options compared

Rule of thumb: travelling solo with a backpack — the train is decent value. 3+ people, ski bags, kids, or a late arrival — the private transfer wins on time, comfort and usually on per-person price too. And if you're considering a rental car, read the winter section below first.

The route: what our drivers actually drive

From Zurich Airport the route heads east through the Swiss Rhine Valley, crosses into Austria in Vorarlberg, passes Feldkirch and Bludenz, and reaches St. Anton either through the Arlberg Tunnel or — in good summer weather — over the Arlberg Pass at St. Christoph (1,800 m). All tolls, including the tunnel (€13), are included in your fixed price. You'll need your passport or EU ID on board: the route crosses the Swiss–Austrian border, though within Schengen there are normally no checks.

Winter traffic: a local driver's guide

February is the busiest month on this route. School holidays rotate week by week across European countries and regions, so every February weekend brings heavy traffic — plan for up to an extra hour, more when it snows.

Bottleneck 1 — the border crossing. Every navigation app sends everyone the same way: exit at Widnau, through Diepoldsau, across the border into Hohenems, back onto the A14. On busy days this backs up badly (it's usually clear before 10:00 and after ~17:00). When it jams, we simply continue a few kilometres on the motorway and cross at Kriessern or Oberriet instead — a local alternative Google Maps won't suggest.

Bottleneck 2 — after Bludenz (the big one). Past the Montafon exit, the motorway narrows from two lanes at 130 km/h to a single lane at 80 km/h, and queues build kilometres ahead of it. Our workaround: exit at Nüziders or Bludenz and take the Klostertalerstrasse — the parallel valley road through Bings, Braz, Dalaas, Wald am Arlberg and Klösterle — then up to Langen and on to St. Anton.

Pass or tunnel? In clear weather the Arlberg Pass over St. Christoph is a beautiful drive. In snow or rain, don't attempt it without a 4x4, snow chains — and the experience to fit them. Standing in the snow with frozen hands, working out chains for the first time, is no way to start a holiday. The safer call is the nearly 14 km Arlberg Tunnel. Our vehicles are 4x4 with chains on board, and drivers who have fitted them a hundred times.

The return journey follows the same pattern in reverse: congestion until Bludenz, then again at the border. That's why on peak days we schedule airport departures with a safety margin — you'll be at check-in two hours before your flight, without stress.

The bottom line: traffic on this route affects everyone equally — rental cars, buses and taxis alike. The difference is what happens next. Our drivers check conditions before every pickup, know the alternative crossings and valley roads, and drive this route several times a day in season. You'll still arrive relaxed — that's the job. And in the rare weeks when roads close entirely for avalanche danger, here's what happens next.

The train option, honestly

From Zurich Airport, take the local train to Zurich HB (~15 min), then the direct Railjet on the Zurich–Vienna line to St. Anton am Arlberg (~2h 45min). The station is in the village centre — a genuine advantage of St. Anton.

The honest downsides: you handle your own skis and luggage through the change; seat reservations sell out on exactly the same peak Saturdays that bring road traffic; and if you're staying in Nasserein, Oberdorf, St. Christoph or Stuben, you'll still need a taxi from the station at the end (from €16 — we meet you at the platform).

FAQ

How long does a taxi from Zurich Airport to St. Anton take?

Around 2h 20min in normal conditions (200 km). On peak winter Saturdays and February weekends, allow up to an extra hour.

Do I need my passport for the transfer?

Yes, carry it — the route crosses from Switzerland into Austria. Both are in Schengen, so there are normally no border checks, and your driver handles the crossing routinely.

Are tolls and the Arlberg Tunnel included in the price?

Yes — your fixed price includes all road tolls and the Arlberg Tunnel. No extras on arrival.

Is the transfer per person or per vehicle?

Per vehicle. From €475 for up to 8 passengers with ski equipment — for groups, this is usually cheaper per person than train tickets.

When should I book my return transfer to the airport?

Ideally together with your arrival transfer. On peak days we plan the departure with a safety margin so you reach Zurich Airport about two hours before your flight.
