Bregenz is the capital of Vorarlberg and the last Austrian town before Germany. It also sits about a thousand metres lower than St. Anton, which is the part people underestimate: when the Arlberg is deep in snow, the lake shore frequently is not, and a January afternoon down there can be an ordinary grey day with no snow in it at all. Pack for the place you are going to rather than the one you are leaving.
From July into August the Bregenzer Festspiele take over the waterfront. The Seebühne — the stage built out into the lake, with room for around seven thousand people — is the reason most summer guests ask us for this drive. Performances finish late and the town is full while they are on; tell us the finishing time when you book and the car is there for it, rather than you looking for one afterwards.
The rest of the year the lake is the draw on its own: the harbour and the boats across to Lindau and Konstanz, and the Pfänder cable car up the hill behind the town for the view over three countries. None of that needs a ski pass, which is why this is one of the few routes we drive as often out of season as in it.
Two airports sit close to Bregenz and are worth knowing about if you are combining the trip with a flight: Altenrhein is about half an hour further along the lake on the Swiss side, and Friedrichshafen is on the German shore opposite. Both have their own fixed transfer prices from St. Anton.
