Taxi from St. Anton to Dornbirn

A taxi from St. Anton am Arlberg to Dornbirn costs from €210 for one to three passengers and from €249 for four to eight, per vehicle and one way, at any hour of the day or night. The drive is about 87 kilometres and takes roughly an hour — the Arlberg tunnel, the Klostertal down to Bludenz, then the motorway past Feldkirch into the Rhine valley.

Dornbirn is the largest city in Vorarlberg, with a little over fifty thousand people. That surprises visitors, because Bregenz is the provincial capital — but the capital is the smaller of the two. Dornbirn is the working city of the valley: the trade fair ground, the shops, the offices.

The Messe is behind most of the business trips we drive here. Fair weeks fill the hotels across the whole valley, which is why guests sometimes end up staying much further away than they planned and need a car at hours no timetable covers. A fixed price per vehicle is easier to account for than several train tickets and a taxi at each end.

For a day out rather than a day of work, the inatura natural history museum sits in the middle of town, and the Karren cable car goes up the hill behind it for the view down the Rhine valley. As with Bregenz, none of it depends on the weather up at the Arlberg: Dornbirn lies around 400 metres, so a snowed-in week in St. Anton is often an ordinary week down here.
