Taxi from St. Anton to Vaduz

A taxi from St. Anton am Arlberg to Vaduz costs from €245 for one to three passengers and from €255 for four to eight, per vehicle and one way, at any hour. It is about 77 kilometres and a little over an hour: down the Klostertal to Bludenz, motorway to Feldkirch, and across the Rhine into the principality.

Here is the part that decides it: Vaduz has no railway station. The line through Liechtenstein runs past the capital rather than into it, and the nearest stop, Schaan-Vaduz, is in the next town. Every other destination on this list can be reached by train if you are patient; Vaduz cannot, not the whole way. That is why this is one of the routes people ask us for even when they would otherwise take the railway.

It is also a road we drive without being asked to. When the motorway past St. Gallen is backed up — ski Saturdays, mostly — our Zurich Airport transfers take the other line, along the Walensee through Sargans and Vaduz and back into Austria near Feldkirch. Drivers who take that road most weekends of the winter do not need directions for a Tuesday.

Two practical things. Liechtenstein pays in Swiss francs, not euros, so a card is easier than cash you have to change for a single afternoon. And the castle on the rock above the town is the prince’s residence and not open to visitors — people arrive expecting to go in. The town itself, the museums and the shopping street along the valley floor are all within a few hundred metres of each other, which makes it a short, flat visit once you are standing in it.

Vaduz sits between two of our other Swiss fares: Buchs is about ten minutes away on the Swiss bank of the Rhine, and Sargans a little further south. If you want two of them in one day, say so when you book — it is one journey with a wait, not two fares.
