Why Vaduz is the one that really needs a car

Here is the part that decides it: Vaduz has no railway station. The line through Liechtenstein runs past the capital rather than into it, and the nearest stop, Schaan-Vaduz, is in the next town. Every other destination on this list can be reached by train if you are patient; Vaduz cannot, not the whole way. That is why this is one of the routes people ask us for even when they would otherwise take the railway.
It is also a road we drive often: down the Klostertal, past Bludenz and on to Feldkirch. Our drivers do not need directions for it.
Two practical things. Liechtenstein pays in Swiss francs, not euros, so a card is easier than cash you have to change for a single afternoon. And the castle on the rock above the town is the prince’s residence and not open to visitors — people arrive expecting to go in. The town itself, the museums and the shopping street along the valley floor are all within a few hundred metres of each other, which makes it a short, flat visit once you are standing in it.

Out of St. Anton the S16 goes straight into the Arlberg road tunnel — just under 14 kilometres, tolled, about fifteen minutes — and comes out at Langen am Arlberg. From there the road runs down the Klostertal to Bludenz and west past Feldkirch.
And then, unusually, we cross into Liechtenstein and stay there. Most of our drives into Switzerland pass the principality on the far bank of the Rhine without ever entering it. This one goes in at Schaanwald and follows the main road down through Nendeln and Schaan into the capital. It is the one route on this list where the border crossing is part of the destination.
Seventy-two kilometres in all, and about an hour and twenty. No pass anywhere on it, nothing that closes, and the only slow stretch is the last one — which is the next section.
Vaduz is thirteen kilometres closer than Buchs — and takes exactly as long
Look at a map and the two look interchangeable: Buchs and Vaduz face each other across the Rhine, about three kilometres apart. From St. Anton they are not interchangeable at all. Vaduz is 72 kilometres, Buchs is 85 — and both take about an hour and twenty.
The reason is what happens after Feldkirch. Vaduz is reached by going into Liechtenstein and down its main road: shorter on the map, but a Bundesstraße through one village after another, with fifty-kilometre limits most of the way. Buchs is reached by crossing the Rhine further north and running down the Swiss motorway on the other bank: thirteen kilometres longer, and faster per kilometre.
Seventy-two kilometres in eighty minutes is about 54 km/h. Eighty-five in the same eighty is about 64. That gap is the whole difference between a road through towns and a road around them — and it is why the shorter drive is not the quicker one.
