The Route from Lech am Arlberg to Friedrichshafen Airport
The Lech am Arlberg to Friedrichshafen Airport route starts on the Flexenstraße, the L198, which climbs out of Lech through the galleries cut into the rock face and runs through Zürs to the junction at Alpe Rauz. There the transfer turns west and drops past Stuben am Arlberg to Langen, joins the S16 short of the tunnel mouth — the Lech to Friedrichshafen drive never enters the Arlberg tunnel — and follows the Klostertal down to Bludenz. From Bludenz it is the A14 through the Rhine valley and the Pfänder tunnel, the border at Hörbranz, and then the lake shore to the airport.
The journey is direct: no other passengers, no second vehicle and no stop between your door and the hall. The hard part comes at the beginning rather than the end — once the mountain road is behind you, the rest is motorway all the way to the lake.
Two places on that road have pages of their own: Zürs am Arlberg, the first village on the Flexen road, and Stuben am Arlberg, where the descent into the Klostertal begins. We drive the same road from both.
Austria into Germany: what the border means on the way out
The border is crossed at Hörbranz, just before Lindau, about twenty minutes short of the airport. Austria and Germany are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no check there. Temporary checks can be reintroduced, which is why the identity document you are flying with should be somewhere you can reach it rather than at the bottom of a case.
Everything else is our problem. The Austrian vignette and the Pfänder tunnel toll are inside the fixed price, and no Arlberg tunnel toll arises on this route at all. Nobody stops at a toll booth, and nobody adds anything up at the end of the journey.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and the luggage is not moved once between your accommodation and the departures hall. Anyone covering the same ground by train and bus changes vehicle several times in those hours — each time with a ski bag.
Innsbruck is the only one of the six airports we drive to with no border involved at all. Zurich lies in a third country, with a vignette of its own. Friedrichshafen sits between the two: one border, close to the end, with the airport immediately beyond it.
