Stuben is the shortest and the most straightforward: 125 kilometres, of which only the last three are mountain road. We leave the S16 at the Langen am Arlberg exit and climb three kilometres of the L197 — that is the whole of the ascent. No Flexenstraße, no pass, no tunnel. It is why this drive holds its timing in bad weather better than the other four.
Four resorts, four different finishes
As far as Langen, every one of our Friedrichshafen transfers takes the same road. After it they separate: Stuben is three kilometres uphill; Zürs carries on over Alpe Rauz onto the Flexenstraße; Lech is eight kilometres beyond that; and St. Anton goes through the Arlberg tunnel to the Tyrolean side.
Which resort the transfer serves
Stuben am Arlberg stands at 1,409 metres in the Klostertal, at the western foot of the pass, and is the smallest of the five Arlberg resorts — around a hundred people live there. The village and the Albona
Stuben is the smallest of the five ski resorts on the Arlberg and one of the least changed. The Albona above it is not a mountain for freshly groomed piste but one for the days after a snowfall — north-facing slopes that hold the powder. People who choose this resort usually know exactly why they are not choosing St. Anton. The valley station of the Albonabahn stands in the village, on the same road we arrive by.
Since the Flexenbahn opened, Stuben has been linked on skis directly with Zürs and Lech: you stay in the smallest resort and still ski the whole area. The church and the statue of Hannes Schneider, who was born here, are a few minutes' walk from one another — nobody staying in Stuben needs a car, and ski buses connect the village to the other resorts.
Winter and summer transfers
Most of our Friedrichshafen transfers run in winter, when the skiing is on. Summer transfers are quieter, but it is the same road and the same price — the same private transfers carry walkers and cyclists in July that carry skiers in February.

The Friedrichshafen Airport to Stuben am Arlberg Route
The journey begins on Lake Constance and ends at 1,409 metres. From the airport the B31 runs east along the shore to Lindau; a few minutes later, at Hörbranz, the road crosses into Austria.
From there it is motorway: the A14 through the Pfänder tunnel and past Bregenz, then down the Rhine valley through Dornbirn and Feldkirch to Bludenz. There the route turns east onto the S16 and climbs the Klostertal, past Dalaas, Wald am Arlberg and Klösterle to Langen am Arlberg.
And then it is almost over. At Langen we leave the expressway, short of the tunnel mouth, and climb three kilometres of the L197. At 1,409 metres the drive ends in the middle of the village.
The roads this transfer uses
Four roads make up the drive, and they could not be more different: a lakeside road, a motorway, an expressway up a valley, and three kilometres of mountain road. The first three are main roads driven by everybody and they are comfortable at any hour; the fourth is short but steeper than a map suggests. A direct transfer takes all four without you changing vehicle once.
Where Stuben sits
Stuben is located at the western foot of the pass, and everything else is above it. Langen am Arlberg is three kilometres down the hill — the closest railway station, and also the exit we arrive by. Above the village, at Alpe Rauz, the road divides: north onto the Flexenstraße, east onto the pass. Zürs and St. Christoph are only a few minutes away from there.
That position is why the transfer finishes so quickly. Stuben is the last village before the climb and needs no climb of its own: we arrive from below, where every other Arlberg resort still has a mountain road ahead of it.
Winter conditions on this road
Conditions change along the way rather than all at once: Friedrichshafen can be dry while the Klostertal is already under snow. What separates this route from our others is the length of the finish — three kilometres rather than twenty. Stuben is the transfer where a bad night changes the timing least.
Germany into Austria: what the border means for your transfer
The border is crossed at Hörbranz, just past Lindau, about twenty minutes after setting off. Germany and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no check there. Temporary checks can be reintroduced, which is why you should carry the identity document you flew with.
Everything else is our problem: the Austrian motorway vignette and the Pfänder tunnel toll are inside the fixed price. No Arlberg tunnel toll arises here, because the drive to Stuben turns off at Langen rather than entering the tunnel.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and nobody stops at a toll booth with a wallet out.

Skis, snowboards and luggage
