Private Taxi & Airport Transfers from Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein to Stuben am Arlberg
Altenrhein Airport to Stuben am Arlberg is about 95 km by road and takes around 1 hour 10 minutes. A private transfer with Taxi Anton costs from €300 per vehicle, one way — not per person — for up to eight passengers with luggage and ski equipment.
Airport transfers on this route are priced the same in both directions, and the price covers both vignettes, Swiss and Austrian, skis and snowboards, child seats, and the drive to the door of your accommodation. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before pickup.
Taxi Anton is a taxi company based in St. Anton am Arlberg. We do not pass work on to anyone: the cars are our own — Mercedes Minibus 4x4 and VW Caravelle Minibus 4x4 — and so are the drivers, experienced local drivers who know these roads.
Altenrhein or St. Gallen — the same airport
The airport is officially Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein, code ACH. It stands at Altenrhein on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance and is named after St. Gallen, the city about twenty kilometres inland. If your ticket says St. Gallen, it is the same place and the same hall — and this is the right page.
The shortest drive to the Arlberg
Of the six airports we serve, Altenrhein is the closest to Stuben: 95 kilometres. The reason is where it stands — at the mouth of the Rhine where it meets Lake Constance, which is to say at the entrance of the valley the drive follows anyway.
Which resort the transfer serves
Stuben is the smallest of the five Arlberg villages and, at 95 kilometres, the shortest drive of any airport we serve to any of them. Altenrhein is closer to Stuben than Innsbruck is, and a good deal closer than Friedrichshafen.
It sits at the foot of the Arlberg on the Vorarlberg side, where the Klostertal ends and the road begins to climb towards Alpe Rauz. Stuben belongs to Ski Arlberg along with St. Anton, St. Christoph, Zürs and Lech, so one lift pass covers all of them wherever you sleep.
Skiing here runs from early December to late April. What the skiing means for the journey in is in our guide to skiing on the Arlberg, and the rest is in what you need to know about the Arlberg.
Winter and summer transfers
Most of our Altenrhein transfers run in winter, when the resort is full and the skiing is on. Summer transfers are quieter, but it is the same road and the same price, and the same private transfers carry walkers and cyclists in July that carry skiers in February.
What a ski transfer carries
A ski transfer is not simply a taxi with skis in it. The rear ski rack takes skis and boards outside the cabin, so eight people and eight ski bags travel in one vehicle instead of two. If you are collecting hired equipment on the way, tell us and we will stop at the ski shop in the resort before your accommodation. What to bring and what travels free is set out on the luggage page.
Most of our winter work is ski transfers. From Altenrhein we drive to all five Arlberg villages: St. Christoph, Zürs, St. Anton and Lech — around 300 kilometres of piste and 85 lifts, on one pass.
Altenrhein to Stuben Transfer: Price, Distance & Journey Time
A private transfer from Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein to Stuben am Arlberg costs from €300 per vehicle, one way. The price is for the vehicle and not per person: two of you or eight of you, the figure is the same — in December as in July.
It is fixed before you book and does not move on the day — not for a pickup in the middle of the night, not on a holiday, and not when snow makes the drive longer. Every fare is on the price list, and every route is on the airport transfer page.
Two vignettes are inside the price, not one. The drive begins in Switzerland and ends in Austria, so both are needed — and both are our problem. No Arlberg tunnel toll arises at all: the drive to Stuben leaves the S16 at Langen and never enters the tunnel.
If you are comparing quotes, look at what a figure covers. Some operators advertise a low entry price for the smallest vehicle on their list — three passengers, no skis. Our €300 is the price of a vehicle that takes eight people with ski equipment.

The Altenrhein Airport to Stuben am Arlberg Route
The drive begins on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance and ends at 1,409 m. From Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein the road runs south through St. Margrethen to the Rhine.
At Höchst the road crosses the Rhine, and with it the border from Switzerland into Austria. That happens early — a few minutes in, rather than close to the destination.
After that it joins the A14 and passes Bregenz on the south side. The Pfänder tunnel never appears on this route: it lies north of the city, and our drives from Friedrichshafen and Memmingen come from that side and go through it. This one does not.
The A14 follows the Rhine valley past Dornbirn, Hohenems and Rankweil to Feldkirch and on to Bludenz. There the route turns east onto the S16 and climbs into the Klostertal, past Wald am Arlberg and Klösterle to Langen am Arlberg.
At Langen am Arlberg the transfer leaves the S16 before the tunnel portal and climbs three kilometres of the L197 to the village at 1,409 metres. No Arlberg tunnel toll arises on this drive at all.
It is the shortest final stretch of the five — shorter than the climb to Zürs, shorter than the pass road to St. Christoph, and far shorter than the run through to Lech. Three kilometres, and the road stops in the village rather than going over anything.
Winter conditions on this road
Ninety-two of the ninety-five kilometres are motorway and main road; the last three are a mountain road. That is the whole of the winter question on this route, and it is the shortest version of that question we have. The Klostertal below is a main road, cleared early and driven all winter.
Switzerland into Austria: what the border means for your transfer
The border is crossed at Höchst, over the Rhine, a few minutes after setting off. Switzerland and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so you are not normally asked for documents there.
One thing here is different from our German borders: Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU customs union. Passport checks are not the rule, but a customs check is possible in a way it simply is not between Germany and Austria. Carry the identity document you flew with somewhere you can reach it.
Everything else is our problem. Both vignettes, the Swiss and the Austrian, are inside the fixed price. Nothing is collected from you in the car, and you do not stop at a toll booth with your wallet out.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and the luggage is not moved once between the arrivals hall and your accommodation. Anyone covering the same ground by rail changes between two national networks at this border — each time with a ski bag in hand.
Two of our six airports are in Switzerland: Altenrhein and Zurich. Innsbruck is the only one with no border at all; Friedrichshafen and Memmingen are in Germany, where the customs union is the same one.
Where the transfer ends in Stuben
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall at Altenrhein, holding a sign with your name on it. It is the smallest airport we drive to: a single hall, with the car parks directly in front of it. A few steps from the door to the vehicle — no walk through two terminals and no train underneath.
We track the flight number you give us when booking. If the flight lands late the pickup moves with it, at no extra charge and without you having to do anything.
We stop in front of your accommodation. Stuben is small enough that every house is on the village road, and there are no closed streets to work around — the vehicle reaches the door, whichever end of the village it stands at.
With a drive this short the whole journey is one sitting: the border, the Rhine valley and the Klostertal fit inside an hour and ten minutes, and the luggage is not touched between the arrivals hall and the front door.
Arriving in Stuben from Altenrhein Airport: Where We Set You Down
Altenrhein Airport to Stuben: 95 km, about 1 hour 10 minutes, from €300 per vehicle, one way. The car for Stuben leaves the single hall at Altenrhein, crosses into Austria at Höchst and finishes on the L197 from Langen; the next stop after the border is your door in Stuben, and nothing is unloaded on the way.
Stuben has around a hundred residents and a few lanes around the through road, all of them open to the car, so the transfer from Altenrhein Airport ends in front of your house. Hotel Mondschein, the Après Post Hotel, the Wohlfühlhotel Hubertushof, Hotel Berghaus Stuben, Chalet Mondschein and Chalet Rosa are the doors we know best.
The last part of the drive is three kilometres of the L197 up from Langen am Arlberg, which is also the nearest station; the Flexen road is not on it, so Stuben is less exposed to closures than Zürs or Lech. At 1,409 metres, on the snowy western side, it still wants a 4x4 — which is what we come in.
Going home from Stuben works the same way in reverse: the Stuben to Altenrhein Airport transfer collects you from the same door in Stuben, three and a half hours before your flight — for a 13:00 departure, at 09:30.
Why Choose Taxi Anton for Altenrhein to Stuben Transfers
Most companies selling this route sit neither on Lake Constance nor on the Arlberg — they pass the job on. We drive every transfer ourselves, in our own vehicles and with our own drivers.
The last three kilometres are the reason the vehicles are what they are. Anyone can drive the Rhine valley motorway; the L197 up to 1,409 metres in February is a different job, and it is the one we do every day of the winter.
And the price is settled beforehand. On a drive that crosses a border and needs two vignettes, that is not a detail: you know the figure before you get in, and it covers everything.
What you are buying is a reliable arrival: experienced drivers who are on these roads every day of the winter, a comfortable vehicle that takes eight people and their equipment, and a drive that runs door to door. The same drivers run the transfers from Innsbruck and Zurich — one company and one fleet, a different road.
The vehicle for your Altenrhein to Stuben transfer

Picked up at the airport
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall and walks you to the vehicle.

Ski bag on the rear rack
Outside the cabin — nobody spends the drive with a ski bag on their knees.

Chains on when the road needs them
Our drivers carry chains all season and fit them themselves.

To the hotel door
We stop in front of your accommodation, not at a drop-off point.
Ninety-five kilometres, the shortest drive from any of our airports to any Arlberg village, and ninety-two of them are motorway and main road. The car is chosen for the other three: the L197 climbing out of the Klostertal to 1,409 metres.
VW Caravelle T6.1 — Long — 4x4
- Up to 8 passengers
- AWD (4MOTION)

Skis, snowboards and luggage
Skis and snowboards travel on the rear-door ski rack, outside the cabin — nobody spends the drive with a ski bag across their knees. Ski carriage is free: we charge no equipment supplement the way a shared shuttle does. Boot bags, helmets and suitcases go inside with the rest of the luggage.
Both vehicles: 4x4, winter tyres from November to April, snow chains on board.
Both vehicles are four-wheel drive on winter tyres, with chains on board through the season, and skis travel outside on the rear rack. Up to eight passengers with cases, at one price for the vehicle.
Getting from Altenrhein Airport to Stuben: Transfer, Train, Bus or Rental Car?
There are four realistic options for getting from Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein to Stuben, and which of them is the affordable one depends entirely on how many of you are travelling.
Stuben has no railway station. The nearest is Langen am Arlberg, three kilometres down the hill, and from there you still need a road vehicle. A rail journey from Altenrhein also means changing between the Swiss and Austrian networks at the border, with the luggage in your hands each time.
Rail here also brings something our German routes do not: at the border you move between the Swiss and the Austrian networks. With light baggage that is manageable; with a ski bag and a boot bag each, the changes are what decide it, and the last stretch of mountain road is still there at the end.
A rental car earns its keep if you plan to drive during the stay. If it would sit outside the hotel all week, a private transfer saves you the winter driving across a border, two vignettes, and the return of the car on the morning of the flight home.
The bus has the most changes on this route and the tightest timetable. It can be cheap; it is never direct.
The four options, side by side
Of the four options, the private transfer is the only one with no change of vehicle: one car, one price, your door. The bus is the cheapest option and the slowest. A rental car pays off only if you intend to drive during the stay rather than park for a week. And the train ends at Langen am Arlberg, not in Stuben.
Ski groups rarely find the comparison close. Four people travelling with skis pay one fare between them for a private transfer, and every other option charges each of them separately and asks them to carry the equipment between vehicles.
Stuben am Arlberg from Altenrhein, Innsbruck, Friedrichshafen & Zurich
Stuben am Arlberg is reached from six airports, and we drive from all of them. Altenrhein is the closest: 95 kilometres.
Distance alone rarely settles it, though. Altenrhein is a small airport with a modest schedule — a direct flight at the right hour from Zurich or Munich can be worth more than eighty kilometres less road. That is exactly why the table is here: so you can compare the drive once the flight is decided.
We drive private transfers from Altenrhein to the other four resorts as well — St. Christoph, Zürs, St. Anton and Lech — and the same vehicles work as a local taxi and a train station taxi once you are here.

Return Transfer: Stuben am Arlberg to Altenrhein Airport
For a flight from Altenrhein we leave Stuben three and a half hours before departure. That covers the 95-kilometre drive, the border and the time you need at the airport, all together. There is nothing to add on top — tell us your flight number and we will give you the pickup time.
For Innsbruck it is three hours, for Friedrichshafen four, for Memmingen four and a half, for Zurich five and for Munich six. Altenrhein sits just behind Innsbruck, because the drive is short and the hall is small.
The return costs the same as the way in: from €300 per vehicle, both vignettes and ski equipment included. We collect you from your accommodation at any hour, including before daylight. Booking the return at the same time as the arrival is the convenient way to do it: one message, one fixed price, both directions.
The whole return leg is set out on the Stuben to Altenrhein Airport page.

Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein to Stuben am Arlberg — Frequently Asked Questions
How much is an Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein transfer to Stuben am Arlberg?
A private transfer from Altenrhein Airport to Stuben am Arlberg costs from €300 per vehicle, one way. The price is fixed when you book and covers both vignettes, Swiss and Austrian, skis and snowboards, child seats and the drive to the door of your accommodation.
Is the €300 price per person or per vehicle?
The Altenrhein transfer price is per vehicle, not per person: €300 is the price of the car, not of a seat in it, and it does not change between two passengers and eight. For a family or a ski group that is the whole difference against a shared shuttle, where every passenger pays separately.
Altenrhein or St. Gallen — is it the same airport?
Yes, Altenrhein and St. Gallen are the same airport: it is officially Airport St. Gallen–Altenrhein, code ACH. It stands at Altenrhein on the Swiss shore of Lake Constance and is named after St. Gallen, the city about twenty kilometres inland. If your ticket says St. Gallen, this is the right page.
How far is Stuben am Arlberg from Altenrhein Airport?
Stuben am Arlberg is about 95 kilometres by road from Altenrhein Airport, ending at 1,409 m. The route runs through St. Margrethen to the Rhine, crosses into Austria at Höchst, joins the A14 down the Rhine valley past Dornbirn and Feldkirch to Bludenz, and then turns east onto the S16 into the Klostertal.
How long does the Altenrhein to Stuben transfer take?
The Altenrhein to Stuben transfer takes around 1 hour 10 minutes for the 95 kilometres. It is one of the shortest drives to the Arlberg there is — mostly motorway down the Rhine valley, with the mountain road only at the end.
Is Altenrhein the closest airport to Stuben?
Yes, Altenrhein is the closest airport to Stuben of the six we serve: Stuben is 95 kilometres from Altenrhein, 115 from Innsbruck, 125 from Friedrichshafen and 185 from Zurich. Distance rarely settles it alone, though: a direct flight at the right hour is worth more than twenty kilometres less road.
Does the drive cross a border?
Yes, the drive from Altenrhein to Stuben am Arlberg crosses a border once. Altenrhein Airport is in Switzerland and Stuben am Arlberg is in Austria, and the border is crossed over the Rhine at Höchst, shortly after setting off. Both countries are in the Schengen area, so you are not normally asked for documents there.
How is the Swiss border different from the German one?
The Swiss border differs from the German one because Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU customs union. Passport checks are not routine, but a customs check is possible in a way it is not between Germany and Austria. Carry the identity document you flew with somewhere you can reach it rather than at the bottom of a case.
Are the vignettes and tolls included in the price?
Yes, the Swiss and the Austrian vignette are both inside the €300. No Arlberg tunnel toll arises at all, because the drive to Stuben am Arlberg leaves the S16 at Langen and does not use the tunnel.
Does the route go through the Pfänder tunnel?
No, the route from Altenrhein does not go through the Pfänder tunnel, and that is what is unusual about this drive. The Pfänder tunnel is north of Bregenz; the drives from Friedrichshafen and Memmingen come from that side and go through it. From Altenrhein the border is crossed south of it, at Höchst, and the A14 is joined beyond — the tunnel never appears on this route.
Does the transfer go through the Arlberg tunnel?
No, the transfer to Stuben am Arlberg does not go through the Arlberg tunnel. At Langen am Arlberg the drive leaves the S16 before the tunnel portal and takes the mountain road to Stuben am Arlberg. Only our St. Anton transfer goes through the tunnel, and only there does the toll arise.
Is a mountain pass crossed on the way?
No, no mountain pass is crossed on the way to Stuben. The road to Stuben climbs three kilometres from Langen and stops there; it does not go over anything. It is the simplest arrival of the five Arlberg villages.
Where does the driver meet us at Altenrhein Airport?
The driver meets you at Altenrhein Airport in the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name on it. Altenrhein is the smallest airport we drive to: a single hall, with the car parks directly in front of it. It is a few steps from the door to the vehicle — there is nobody to ring and no meeting point to find.
What happens if our flight is late?
If your flight is late, the pickup moves with it at no extra charge: we track the flight number you give us when booking. You do not need to call or rebook.
Where exactly does the drive end in Stuben?
In Stuben the drive ends in front of your accommodation. The village has no closed streets and the vehicle reaches every house in the village — there is nothing left to carry at the end.
How many passengers and how much luggage fit?
Up to eight passengers with luggage fit in one vehicle, at one price. Skis and snowboards travel free on the external rear rack, outside the cabin, so eight people and eight ski bags go in one vehicle rather than two.
Are the vehicles suitable for winter roads?
Yes, the vehicles are suitable for winter roads: every one is four-wheel drive on winter tyres, with chains on board through the season: Mercedes Minibus 4x4 and VW Caravelle Minibus 4x4. Most of the route is motorway down the Rhine valley, but the last stretch up to 1,409 m is a mountain road in winter, and that is what the vehicles are chosen for.
Do you charge extra for skis, snowboards or child seats?
No, we do not charge extra for skis, snowboards or child seats. Skis and snowboards travel free on the rear rack and child seats and boosters are fitted free — just tell us the ages when you book.
Do you drive at night and on holidays?
Yes, we drive at night and on holidays, at any hour and on any date, at the same fixed price. A pickup at two in the morning on the 25th of December costs what the same journey costs at noon in July.
Can you stop at a ski rental shop on the way?
Yes, we stop at the ski shop in the resort before your accommodation if you tell us when you book, so the equipment is fitted before you arrive rather than the next morning.
Can we take the train from Altenrhein Airport to Stuben?
Stuben has no railway station; the nearest is Langen am Arlberg. There is no train from the airport itself, though, and at the border you move between the Swiss and Austrian networks — every change made carrying the luggage yourself.
Is a rental car a good alternative?
Whether a rental car is a good alternative depends on what you do after you arrive. A rental car earns its keep if you plan to drive during the stay; if it would sit outside the hotel all week, a private transfer saves the winter driving across a border, two vignettes, and the return of the car on the morning of the flight home.
How do we pay?
You pay the driver directly, by card or in cash. The price is fixed per vehicle and confirmed when you book, so you know the full amount before the journey starts.
Can we book the return to Altenrhein as well?
Yes, you can book the return to Altenrhein as well, and it costs the same in that direction: from €300 per vehicle. For a flight out of Altenrhein we leave Stuben three and a half hours before departure, and we ring you the evening before to set the exact time. Say so with the request and both journeys come back in one quote.
