Leaving Lech means the Flexenstraße first
Every drive out of Lech begins the same way, wherever it is going: over Zürs and along the Flexenstraße to the Alpe Rauz, then down to Stuben and Langen. About twenty kilometres, and they are the part a distance calculator underestimates — galleries, bends and speed limits, not fast road.
When there is avalanche risk the Flexenstraße is closed, and then there is no way round. It is the only road out of Lech in that direction. Guests stay the night in Stuben, Langen or St. Anton and travel on the next morning, usually after eight, once the road opens.
That is not small print, it is the reason we set off earlier than the arithmetic needs on a long drive. We can see in the morning how the road is, and we would rather tell you the evening before to start half an hour earlier than promise an arrival time that depends on a barrier. Getting you there on time is what the margin is for, and it is the one thing a reliable transfer has to get right.

Where we pick you up in Lech
The transfer starts at your door. Where a vehicle can reach it we collect there; where it cannot, at an agreed point nearby.
- Lech village
No restricted streets here — we pull up at the hotel door like anywhere else.
- Oberlech
Three ways in, depending on the building: the Oberlechbahn valley station, the Umschlaghalle and your hotel’s own tunnel, or the whole way up by road. Reception knows which is yours.
- Zug near Lech
Reached directly, a few minutes up the valley beyond Lech.
- Zürs am Arlberg
On the road out in any case — a pickup there costs no detour.
The road on to Buchs SG
Klostertal, Bludenz, Feldkirch, and across the Rhine — about an hour and twenty, and no pass anywhere on it.
Buchs is the first Swiss station on the line that runs through the Arlberg. The trains between Vienna and Zurich stop here, which makes it the point where an Austrian journey becomes a Swiss one: through carriages end, Swiss tickets begin. It has been a frontier station for as long as there has been a railway, and it still feels like one.
We will say the obvious thing rather than hope you miss it: for one or two people with light luggage there is a train, and it is the better buy. What it does not do is leave when you need it to, carry four sets of skis up a flight of steps, or run at five in the morning — and Lech has no station, so a rail journey from here starts with a road transfer anyway.
The Lech to Buchs SG route on the map

The route from Lech to Buchs, stop by stop
About 75 kilometres and an hour and twenty. Out of Lech on the Flexenstraße, down the Klostertal to Bludenz, onto the A14 past Feldkirch, and over the Rhine into Switzerland. The whole drive descends, from 1,450 metres in Lech to about 450 in the valley.
One slow section, and it is the first twenty kilometres. Everything after Langen is fast road, and there is no pass anywhere on this route — nothing that can be shut for the afternoon, which on a travel day with a booked train is worth something.
You may notice this is the same drive as the one to Vaduz. It is — to within a hundred metres. The next section is about why the two pages are not the same thing at all.
Buchs or Vaduz? Three kilometres and a river
We measured both, and the answer is almost funny: Lech to Vaduz is 74.7 kilometres, Lech to Buchs is 74.8. A hundred metres apart, both an hour and a quarter, both on the same road until nearly the end. The two towns face each other across the Rhine about three kilometres apart.
What separates them is not the drive, it is the reason for it. Vaduz has no railway station at all — the line clips the north of the principality and the nearest stop is in the next town. Buchs is nothing but a railway station, in the sense that matters here: it is the first Swiss one on the Arlberg line, and people come to it to get on a train, not to stay.
So if you are going to Liechtenstein, ask for Vaduz and we take you to the door because nothing else will. If you are going to Switzerland by rail, ask for Buchs and we take you to the platform. The price is effectively the same either way — it is the same hour and twenty of driving.
Buchs or Sargans? Both are stations, and they are not the same one
We drive to two Swiss stations on this side of the country and guests regularly ask which. The short answer: Buchs is the border, Sargans is the junction.
Buchs sits on the line that runs under the Arlberg, so it is the natural place to join a train that is already going your way — the Zurich–Vienna Railjet passes through both. It is 22 kilometres nearer than Sargans and about five minutes less.
Sargans is where that line meets the one from Zurich to Chur, which makes it the place to change rather than the place to start. If your destination is south into Graubünden, or west towards Zurich, Visp and Zermatt, the extra 22 kilometres usually buy you a better connection. Tell us where you are actually going and we will say which of the two, without padding the drive.
- Buchs — the border
First Swiss stop on the Arlberg line. Nearest to Lech, about an hour and twenty.
- Sargans — the junction
Where the Zurich line meets the Chur line. Twenty kilometres further on.
- Vaduz — no station at all
Three kilometres from Buchs, across the Rhine. Door to door is the only way.
- Same drive, same price
Buchs and Vaduz are the same hour and twenty. Only the last bridge differs.
Taxi or train from Lech to Buchs?
This is the route where the train case is at its strongest, and we would rather say so than have you find out. Langen am Arlberg is on the same line; the Railjet runs through to Buchs without a change; for two people it costs a fraction of a car.
Three things still decide it the other way often enough. Lech has no station, so the transfer down the Flexenstraße is on your bill either way. The Railjet runs four times a day, which is not a timetable you can bend around a six-in-the-morning start. And four people with ski bags turn one easy train into a lot of lifting.
Our honest summary: two of you, light, with a Railjet at a reasonable hour — take the train, and we will drive you to Langen for it. A family, a group, a flight to catch, or an hour that no timetable covers — stay in the car.
| Private transfer | Train | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts at | Your door in Lech | Langen or St. Anton — Lech has no station |
| Getting to the train | Not needed | A transfer down the Flexenstraße first |
| Changes | None | None on the Railjet, one or two otherwise |
| Departure time | Yours | Four Railjets a day, plus regional services |
| Skis and cases | Loaded once, stay with you | You carry them on and off |
| Arrives at | The platform, or any address | Buchs station |
| Best for | Groups, families, an early start | One or two travelling light |
And back again: from Buchs SG to Lech
We drive the transfer in both directions, at the same fixed price. Give us the time and the address in Buchs SG when you ask, and a car is there for it — late at night and early in the morning included.
If you already know you are coming back, ask for both directions at once: the car is then allocated to both, and booking early costs you nothing extra.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a transfer from Lech to Buchs SG?
We give you the fixed price on request — per vehicle for up to 8 passengers, not per person. Send us the pickup address, the date, the time and how many of you there are, and you get the binding price back before you commit to anything.
How do I pay for the ride?
You pay the driver directly, in cash or by card — Visa and Mastercard are accepted. The price is fixed per vehicle and confirmed when you book, so you know the full amount before the journey starts.
Do you collect from Oberlech and Zug as well?
Yes. In Oberlech the meeting point depends on how your building is reached: at the Oberlechbahn valley station, at the Umschlaghalle if your hotel has a tunnel of its own, or the whole way up if the road goes there. Tell us what reception told you. Zug we reach directly.
Do you drive at night and early in the morning?
Yes, around the clock. For a departure before six in the morning, book the day before so the driver and the vehicle are already allocated.
Is there a train from Lech to Buchs?
Not from Lech itself — Lech has no railway station. The nearest are Langen am Arlberg and St. Anton, both on the line that runs on through Buchs, so a rail journey starts with a transfer down the Flexenstraße in any case. From Langen the Railjet reaches Buchs without a change.
How long does Lech to Buchs take?
About an hour and twenty for roughly 75 kilometres. The Flexenstraße out of Lech is the slow part; from Langen westwards it is fast road, and there is no pass on the route.
Is Buchs or Sargans the better station for us?
Buchs is the border station on the Arlberg line and it is the nearer of the two — about 22 kilometres and five minutes less. Sargans is the junction where that line meets the one from Zurich to Chur, so it is usually better if you are going south into Graubünden or west towards Zurich and Visp. Tell us the destination and we will say which.
Why does Buchs cost about the same as Vaduz?
Because it is the same drive. Lech to Vaduz is 74.7 kilometres and Lech to Buchs is 74.8 — the two face each other across the Rhine, about three kilometres apart. The road is identical until nearly the end.
