Door-to-Door Pickup in Zürs am Arlberg

The Route from Zürs am Arlberg to Altenrhein Airport
The Zürs am Arlberg to Altenrhein Airport route drops from the first metre. The transfer follows the Flexenstraße down to Alpe Rauz, turns towards Stuben and reaches the S16 at Langen am Arlberg, where the mountain part is over. From there the road runs down the Klostertal past Klösterle and Dalaas to Bludenz, joins the A14 through the Rhine valley past Feldkirch and Dornbirn, and crosses into Switzerland at Höchst, south of Bregenz. The Arlberg tunnel is not on this route: Zürs is already on the western side of the mountain, so there is nothing to go under.
The journey is direct: no other passengers, no second vehicle and no stop between your door and the hall. The hard part comes at the beginning rather than the end — once the mountain road is behind you, the rest is motorway all the way to the lake.
Two places on that road have pages of their own: Stuben am Arlberg, where the Flexen road meets the Klostertal, and Langen am Arlberg, the station at the western portal of the Arlberg tunnel. We drive the same road from both.
Austria into Switzerland: what the border means on the way out
The border is crossed at Höchst, south of Bregenz, about ten minutes short of the airport. Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU customs union — so a passport check is the exception, while a customs check is possible. On the way out that matters more than it did on the way in: you are leaving the EU customs area. Keep the identity document you are flying with somewhere you can reach it rather than at the bottom of a case.
Everything else is our problem. On this road the vehicle needs two vignettes, the Austrian one and the Swiss one, and both are inside the fixed price, and no Arlberg tunnel toll arises on this route at all. The Pfänder tunnel is not on this drive — it leaves the Rhine valley south of it. Nobody stops at a toll booth, and nobody adds anything up at the end of the journey.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and the luggage is not moved once between your accommodation and the departures hall. Anyone covering the same ground by train and bus changes vehicle several times in those hours — each time with a ski bag.
Innsbruck is the only one of the six airports we drive to with no border involved at all. Friedrichshafen and Memmingen are in Germany: one border, one vignette. Altenrhein and Zurich are both in Switzerland and need two — but Zurich is nearly twice as far away.
On the Morning of Your Flight
By the evening before, you know when you are leaving. The call is the point at which a forecast is replaced by something better: around sixty colleagues are connected by radio, and whoever is out on the road says what it is doing.
After fresh snow we leave earlier. If the morning needs more time, you hear it the evening before and plan around it. Nobody can promise a mountain road is always open — but we can promise you hear about it before you get up, not on the doorstep.
Three and a half hours from Zürs is the same figure as from St. Anton, even though the drive is shorter, and the reason is the start rather than the end: the first twenty minutes are mountain road. The end is the easy part. Altenrhein is one hall on the lake shore, so the walk from the vehicle to the desk takes under a minute.
Altenrhein is a compact regional airport with a single terminal. We set you down directly in front of it; the walk from the vehicle to check-in is a short one, and there is no second terminal and no train between them. That is the difference from a large airport, and on the morning of a departure you notice it.
Checking in with ski luggage still takes longer than checking in without it: oversized bags go in separately. That is what the three and a half hours are for — not the drive itself, which takes about 1h 20min.

How Do You Want to Get to Altenrhein Airport?
On the way home one argument turns around. Arriving, you get there when you get there; leaving, the timetable decides when your day starts — you work back from the train’s departure rather than from your flight.
Zürs has no railway station and no scheduled service that reaches Altenrhein, so the realistic alternatives are a bus down to Langen and a train from there, or a car.
