The Route from Zürs am Arlberg to Munich Airport
The Zürs am Arlberg to Munich Airport drive runs downhill from the first metre. The Flexenstraße drops the short distance to the junction at Alpe Rauz, then the road continues past Stuben am Arlberg to Langen, where it joins the S16 short of the tunnel mouth. From there the Klostertal runs down to Bludenz, the A14 follows the Rhine valley through Feldkirch and past Bregenz, the border comes at Hörbranz, and the A96 runs east past Lindau and Memmingen to the airport.
The journey is direct: no other passengers, no second vehicle and no stop between your door and the hall. The hard part comes at the beginning rather than the end — once the mountain road is behind you, the rest is motorway. Which of the three roads we take after that is the driver's call on the morning.

Austria into Germany: what the border means on the way out
Where the border is crossed depends on the road: at Hörbranz going west, at Ehrwald over the Fernpass, at Kufstein going east. Whichever it is, it is crossed exactly once. Austria and Germany are both in the Schengen area, so there is normally no check there. Temporary checks can be reintroduced, which is why the identity document you are flying with should be somewhere you can reach it rather than at the bottom of a case.
Everything else is our problem. The Austrian vignette is inside the fixed price on all three roads, and so is the Pfänder tunnel toll on the days we go west. Nobody stops at a toll booth, and nobody adds anything up at the end of the journey.
In practice the border is a road sign and nothing more. You stay seated, the vehicle keeps going, and the luggage is not moved once between your accommodation and the departures hall. Anyone covering the same ground by train and bus changes vehicle several times in those hours — each time with a ski bag.
Innsbruck is the only one of the six airports we drive to with no border involved at all. Zurich lies in a third country, with a vignette of its own. Munich means one border — just not always the same one, because there are three roads to it.
