Zurich Airport Pickup & Meet & Greet

The Zurich Airport to St. Christoph Route
The first two thirds of the drive are motorway, and they run the same line every time. Out of Zurich Airport the road heads east past Winterthur and St. Gallen, then crosses into Austria at Diepoldsau.
From the border it turns south down the Rhine valley through Hohenems and Feldkirch, picks up the A14 as far as Bludenz, and carries on along the S16 into the Klostertal past Klösterle towards the Arlberg.
Then comes the part where our drive differs from most. We leave the expressway at the exit signed Arlbergpass / Langen / Lech / Zürs / Stuben, pass the railway station at Langen am Arlberg, run through a tunnel of about two kilometres, and come out in Stuben am Arlberg.
From Stuben the hairpins begin. The pass road climbs in tight bends to the fork at Alpe Rauz, where the left turn goes to Zürs, Lech, Oberlech and Zug. We keep right, past Alpe Rauz, and the last kilometres climb to 1,800 m and into St. Christoph am Arlberg.
We do not use the Arlberg road tunnel. The 14 km tunnel is tolled and it comes out at St. Anton — from there it is seven kilometres back uphill to St. Christoph. Over the pass the journey is shorter, it carries no toll, and the road runs through the village itself.
In winter this is exactly the stretch that makes a local driver worth having: between Stuben and Alpe Rauz there is snow on the road, and the bends drive nothing like a motorway.
The route itself never changes — it is the only road into St. Christoph. What changes is the day. After fresh snow the climb from Stuben takes longer; on a dry surface it barely does. Train to St. Anton, then onwards
St. Christoph has no railway station. The nearest is at St. Anton am Arlberg, seven kilometres away and some 300 metres lower. From Zurich Airport trains run via Zurich HB and Innsbruck, or via Buchs and Bludenz — with changes, luggage and a ski bag. The train therefore covers only part of the journey; from St. Anton you still need a bus or a taxi up to St. Christoph.
Hire car
If you want a car for the rest of the week, driving yourself is reasonable. Count the Swiss and Austrian vignettes, fuel and parking alongside the rental — and in winter, a vehicle equipped for the hairpins above Stuben. The pass road can be demanding, particularly in fresh snow, which is why suitable winter equipment matters.
Shared airport shuttle
Several companies sell shared runs from Zurich into the alpine resorts. For a solo traveller with light luggage that is often cheaper than a private transfer. A late arrival can mean the booked departure has already gone, though, and many of those services finish in St. Anton rather than up at St. Christoph.

Travelling alone with hand luggage, the train or a shared seat is the cheapest route. What to Do in St. Christoph: Après-Ski & Winter Activities
St. Christoph is small, and the evening happens inside the houses. There is no street of bars; there is a handful of exclusive hotels and restaurants, each running its own. That is the character of the village — a few addresses that do everything themselves.
Three of those bars are worth knowing by name: the one at Hotel Maiensee, the bar at the Alpenhotel St. Christoph, and the bar at the Ski Austria Academy, the federal training centre in the middle of the village.
The best known address of all is the Hospiz Alm — a separate house from the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel, despite the name. It is first of all a restaurant, and what it is famous for is the cellar: hundreds of 30-litre bottles held in brackets along the walls and under the vaulted ceiling. You can eat there without knowing anything about wine — but the cellar is worth looking at.
If the evening carries on after that, it carries on downhill. The clubs in St. Anton am Arlberg are seven kilometres away and the usual destination after dinner; some guests go across to Zürs or Lech instead. Either way it is a few minutes by taxi.
That is exactly why many guests stay in St. Christoph: quiet nights at 1,800 m, with the nightlife a short drive away rather than under the window. We are on the road around the clock — including for the short run down and back up again.
It does not have to be the evening, either. St. Christoph is high and open, and on a clear day the village itself is the reason to stay outside: winter walking paths start at the pass road, and from the top of it the view runs a long way in both directions. Discover St. Christoph am Arlberg
St. Christoph am Arlberg is one of the highest and smallest alpine villages in Austria — and one with an unusually long history. It did not begin as a ski resort. It began as a shelter.
In the 14th century Heinrich Findelkind built a hospice here for travellers crossing the Arlberg Pass. The pass was dangerous then, and a roof at the top of it decided matters in winter. From that hospice grew the Brotherhood of St. Christoph, which still exists today.
What remains is the name and the position: the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel stands where the original hospice stood, directly on the pass road. The village itself has stayed small — a handful of buildings at 1,800 m, with no centre in the usual sense and no pedestrian zone.
That position at the top of the pass also explains why the snow arrives early here and stays: 1,800 m is a difference you notice in these mountains, and you notice it on the pistes outside the door. What made this the hardest point of the journey in the 14th century is what recommends the village now.

For the transfer, one thing changes above all: on dry roads the journey time in summer is usually easier to plan. The route is the same — Zurich Airport, the S16, Stuben, the Arlberg Pass — only without snow on the bends.

You have your driver’s mobile number in advance, so you can reach each other directly rather than through an office. He gives you a hand with the luggage and the ski bags and walks you to the vehicle.
What happens if my flight to Zurich is delayed?
We track the flight number given with the booking and adjust the pickup time accordingly, at no extra cost and without you having to message anyone. Sixty minutes of waiting are included, which covers passport control, the baggage belt and customs. This is one of the practical reasons a pre-booked private transfer is more reliable than a scheduled shared service: a delayed landing does not mean a missed departure, because the vehicle is yours and it waits.
Can you carry skis and snowboards to St. Christoph?
Yes, and at no extra charge. Skis and boards ride outside on the rear rack, which keeps the space inside the car for passengers and normal luggage rather than making somebody sit with a ski bag across their knees. Tell us how many sets you are bringing when you enquire so the right vehicle comes. Boot bags, helmets and poles travel inside as ordinary luggage.
Are child seats available on the transfer?
Yes, free of charge. Baby seats, toddler seats and booster seats are all available — say which you need and how old the children are when you book, and they are fitted before your driver leaves for the airport. Nobody has to carry a car seat through an airport, and nobody is standing in Arrivals at midnight trying to fit one. For families this is usually the single most convenient part of a private transfer.
How many passengers fit in one vehicle?
Up to eight, with holiday luggage and ski equipment. Passenger capacity alone does not tell the whole story: ski groups also need sufficient space for luggage and equipment, which is why our fleet is made up of long-wheelbase vehicles. Larger groups travel in more than one vehicle at the same fixed price per vehicle, and the cars travel together, so the whole group arrives in St. Christoph at the same time rather than in instalments.
Do you drive through the Arlberg road tunnel?
No. The 14 km tunnel is tolled and it comes out at St. Anton, seven kilometres below St. Christoph, so using it would mean paying for it and then driving back uphill. We leave the S16 at the exit signed Arlbergpass, pass Langen am Arlberg, run through the short tunnel into Stuben and climb the pass from there. At Alpe Rauz the left turn goes to Zürs and Lech; we keep right for St. Christoph.
Do you use 4x4 vehicles for Zurich Airport to St. Christoph transfers?
Yes. Every vehicle we run is four-wheel drive, and they are ours rather than hired in for the season. From November to April they are on winter tyres, with snow chains carried all season. The alpine pass road above Stuben can be demanding during snowfall, and the last climb to 1,800 m is what the fleet is equipped for.
Do you drive to the hotel door in St. Christoph?
Yes. St. Christoph sits on the pass road itself and there is no restricted zone, no goods hall and no change of vehicle, so our transfers really are door-to-door. We stop in front of the entrance to your hotel, chalet or apartment and unload there. Higher up the Arlberg it works differently: reaching Oberlech involves a cable car and a luggage handover. Here the car simply pulls up outside.
How far is St. Christoph from St. Anton?
Seven kilometres by road, and about 300 metres higher. In winter you can also ski down. It is close enough to eat and go out in St. Anton and be back the same evening — which is why a lot of guests choose to stay up at St. Christoph and come down for the night rather than the other way round. We run the short journey both ways as a local taxi, all season and at any hour.
Is there a train to St. Christoph?
No. The nearest station is St. Anton am Arlberg, seven kilometres below the village. Trains from Zurich Airport reach it with changes, but you still need a road transfer up the pass at the end, with your luggage and your ski bag. The train therefore covers only part of the journey, and once the last stage has to be driven anyway, a direct private transfer from the airport is usually simpler and often no dearer.
Is a private transfer from Zurich Airport to St. Christoph better than a shared shuttle?
For most groups, yes. A private transfer leaves when you land rather than at a fixed time, carries nobody but your own party, makes no stops at other hotels on the way, and ends at your own door in St. Christoph. Ski bags and child seats come as standard. A shared seat is cheaper for one person travelling light; from two or three passengers upwards the gap closes quickly.
Can I book a return transfer from St. Christoph to Zurich Airport?
Yes, and most guests book both directions at once. We collect you from the same door we set you down at, and the return is quoted at the same fixed price per vehicle as the outbound. Booking the two together means the pickup time for your flight home is settled before you travel rather than during your holiday.
What time should we leave St. Christoph for a flight home from Zurich?
We leave five hours before departure. That is not the driving time alone — it allows for the descent from the pass, for winter road conditions and for check-in and security at a large airport with ski luggage. Planning it tighter leaves very little margin. Early departures are routine for us, and an experienced local driver makes them calm rather than rushed. Book the outbound and the return together and both times are fixed from the start.
Can you drive us to St. Anton, Zürs or Lech during our stay?
Yes. The airport run is only part of what we do: the same cars work as a local taxi while you are here. St. Anton, Zürs and Lech, or down the Klostertal as far as Klösterle and Langen — for dinner, for an evening out, for a day skiing somewhere else on the Ski Arlberg pass — and we come back for you afterwards. It is the same drivers and the same vehicles as the airport transfer.
Is St. Christoph only a winter destination?
Mostly, but not only. St. Christoph is a high, quiet alpine village in summer, cool when the valley is hot, with walking straight from the door and a pass road busy with road bikes and motorcycles instead of snow. A number of houses close out of season, so it is worth checking before you travel. Our private transfers run through the summer months on the same terms that apply in February, and on dry roads the journey time is easier to plan.
