As soon as your flights are confirmed for Saturdays in high season, Christmas, New Year and the February half-term — those fill first. Midweek and outside the peaks, a few days is usually enough, and we often take same-day bookings when a vehicle is free.

In the arrivals hall, once you have your luggage and are through customs. Your driver waits with a sign showing your name — meet and greet is included on every Zurich to Lech transfer, so the handover is smooth and there is no counter to find and no queue to join.

Your inbound is tracked from the moment it leaves, and the collection time shifts with it. There is nothing for you to report and nothing to rebook — the car is there for the wheels-down, not for the timetable.

We track the flight and move the pickup to match it, and 60 minutes of waiting time are included. Night arrivals and early departures carry no surcharge either.

In Lech, yes — we take you to the door of your hotel, chalet or apartment. Oberlech works differently: depending on which house you are staying in, we bring you either to the cable car in the village, where your luggage is handed over below ground, or up the road to the Umschlaghalle. Your hotel will tell you which one applies, and we plan the arrival around it.

Yes. Our transfers are available around the clock and all year. Pre-dawn departures from Lech and arrivals into Zurich late at night are routine for us in winter, at no extra charge. Book ahead for the busy weeks, when every vehicle is out from early morning.

Yes. A short stop for food or drink is no problem — just mention it to your driver. Guests heading for a chalet or apartment often stop for groceries before the last climb. For a longer stop or a detour, tell us when you book so we can plan the time in.

No, and you do not need one. You are met in person, in arrivals, by someone holding a board with your name. His number is in your hand before departure and he is following the inbound, so lost time changes nothing.

Always private. The vehicle is reserved for you and your group alone — a dedicated car and a dedicated driver, with no other passengers, no extra pickups and no unnecessary stops. You leave when your flight has landed, and what is charged is the car, not the seats in it.

Three, all of them 4x4 and all of them ours: the eight-seat VW Caravelle T6.1 Long, the Mercedes Minibus 4x4 for up to six, and a Mercedes E-Class for one to three. They are maintained for daily work on alpine roads rather than hired in for the season. The two minibuses carry a ski rack on the rear door; in the E-Class the skis travel inside.

Yes, free of charge on every alpine transfer. Skis, boards and boot bags travel on the rack at the back of the vehicle, so they take up no room inside and your luggage keeps the seats free. Tell us what you are bringing when you book.

A normal case and a ski or board bag per person is no trouble at all. Eight passengers with large suitcases and eight sets of ski equipment needs more thought than four do, so send us the passenger number and roughly what you are carrying and we will put the right vehicle on it.

Yes, free of charge. Baby seats, child seats and booster seats are all available on request — tell us the ages when you book and the right seats are fitted before you land, so nobody has to carry one through an airport.

Yes, and it is where a private transfer makes the most sense: the price covers the vehicle, not the seats, which makes it the most affordable option for a group. Up to eight travel in one car, and for larger groups we send several vehicles at the same time so everyone arrives in Lech together.

Yes, with notice. A small pet in a carrier is normally no problem. If you are travelling with a larger dog, tell us when you book so we can plan the space and send the right vehicle.

Yes. Oberlech simply has one more step than the village below it, and which step depends on the house you are staying in. We either set you down at the cable car in Lech, where your luggage is handed over below ground, or drive up the road to the Umschlaghalle, or continue past it to the addresses higher up. Tell us the name of your hotel and we plan the last part around it.

For some houses, yes; for others the piste runs where a street would be, and the way in is through the tunnels beneath it. Reception will know which of the two describes your building — ask when you reserve the room, and pass the answer on to us.

The Bergbahn Oberlech links the centre of Lech with the plateau three hundred metres above it. It runs from 07:00 until 01:00, and for most guests staying in Oberlech it is the last few minutes of the journey from Zurich Airport.

It goes up separately, and you do not carry it. We drive into the underground hall beneath the valley station and unload there; from there the lift crew stacks the cases into the tall containers that travel up alongside the cabin. Around 8,500 luggage containers make that trip in a single winter. Your bags wait at the top station, where your hotel collects them.

It is the goods hall for the whole of Oberlech — an underground hall at the top of the road where the delivery lorries come in, with hundreds of parking spaces. Tunnels run from it left and right to every hotel, and the hotels come down with electric buggies and trailers to collect what has arrived. Above your head, where a road would otherwise be, is the piste.

Yes. There is a barrier with an intercom at the entrance: you press the button, someone answers, you say which hotel you are going to, and it opens. On the way out it senses the vehicle and opens by itself.

Then we drive you to the door. Two kilometres further up the same steep road, where it finally ends, there are more hotels and guesthouses that neither the cable car nor the tunnel system reaches.

Only if your hotel agrees to it and has a space for you down in the hall, and your registration is given to the man on the barrier in advance — without that you will not get in. The climb is steep, too: without four-wheel drive and chains you will end up sideways across it.

East past Winterthur and St. Gallen, across the border at Diepoldsau, then up the Rhine valley through Hohenems and Feldkirch onto the A14 and the S16 to Bludenz. From there the road climbs the Klostertal through Langen and Stuben and turns up the Flexen road to Zürs and Lech. Roughly 200 km. We stay on the motorway rather than cutting through Liechtenstein, where the road runs through villages at 50 km/h.

Yes. The Flexen road at 1,773 m is the way into Lech in winter, and a scenic one on a clear day: kept clear through the season since 1936, with galleries cut into the rock face where the avalanches come down.

Yes. This is our home road, we drive it through the season, and getting guests up it safely in bad weather is the job. What decides the day is information rather than nerve: our drivers are on the Flexen road constantly and talk to one another by radio while they are on it, so the call on chains is made from what the road is doing at that hour.

Yes. Every vehicle is 4x4, on proper winter tyres from November to April, with snow chains carried on board all season. The Flexen road and the climb to Oberlech are the reason for all three, not a brochure.

No. The seven kilometres between Lech and Warth close for the whole season because of avalanche danger, in some years until the end of April. You can still reach Warth-Schröcken on skis, over the Auenfeldjet, but not by car.

Yes, and booking both legs together is the easiest way to do it — your arrival and your departure are then settled in one go, each confirmed door to door before you travel. We collect you from your hotel, chalet or apartment in Lech at a time set by your flight.

Around 5 hours before departure. The sum behind it: roughly 2 hours 20 minutes of driving, a couple of hours in the terminal for a European departure and three for a long-haul, and a margin on top for what winter does to a mountain road. Your driver confirms the exact time with you during your stay.

That depends on your house, and there is one extra step on departure day: your luggage travels down on the cable car, which starts running at 07:00. With an early departure, settle that arrangement with your hotel at the time of booking and let us know the outcome; the collection is built around it.

Yes. Pre-dawn departures from Lech and Oberlech are routine for us through the winter, at no extra charge. The only thing worth settling in advance is how your luggage comes down if you are staying above the village.

Yes. The vehicle is reserved for you and your group alone — no other pickups, no timetable, no shared passengers. Departure is set by your flight, and you are dropped upstairs, outside the desks your airline uses.

Yes. We drive the same route back from Lech to Innsbruck, Munich, Friedrichshafen, Memmingen and Altenrhein. Tell us the airport and your flight time and we will work back to a collection time.

For an easy, door-to-door journey, a pre-booked private transfer: your driver meets you in arrivals and takes you straight to your accommodation in Lech am Arlberg, with no changes and no timetable — a relaxing end to the day rather than another connection to catch. Two passengers with light bags will pay less on the train and bus, or on a shared shuttle.

Part of the way. The train takes you to Langen am Arlberg or St. Anton, and the final 20 km across the pass is then a regional bus, at about hourly intervals, or a taxi from the platform. Coming from Zurich, Langen is usually the better station for Lech.

No, and there cannot be: Lech has no railway station. Whatever route you take, the last stretch into the village has to be driven.

Shared services run on fixed timetables and mainly in the winter season. They can be cheaper for one or two passengers, but there are halts for other guests en route, the drop is at a stop in the village and not at the building you are staying in, and a late landing means it has already left.

On your own or as a couple with little to carry, rail and bus normally undercut us, and we prefer to say it outright. The comparison turns with group size: public transport is priced per passenger, our transfer per vehicle, so from three or four people upwards the private car usually wins on cost as well as on convenience.

Only if you plan to be out and about beyond Lech. For a week spent in Ski Arlberg the car mostly sits parked, and you still have to settle where. Total the hire charge, both vignettes, what you burn in fuel and what a space costs before deciding. Between 1 November and 15 April, Austrian law requires winter tyres in wintry conditions, and the climb to Lech can ask for chains on top of that.

Altenrhein is the closest of the alpine gateway airports at about 100 km, then Innsbruck at 122 km and Friedrichshafen at 130 km. Zurich is farther, at 200 km, but it offers by far the widest choice of flights, which is why most guests arrive there.

Innsbruck is closer and the drive is shorter. Zurich has far more international and long-haul flights, and its approach is less exposed — arrivals into Innsbruck depend on the föhn and on conditions down the valley, and are diverted often enough to matter. Compare the whole journey rather than the distance alone.

Lech am Arlberg is an alpine village in Vorarlberg, in western Austria, at 1,450 m above sea level. It sits at the western end of the Arlberg with Oberlech, Zug and Zürs, and forms part of Ski Arlberg, the largest alpine ski area in Austria. From Zurich Airport the drive is around 200 km and takes about 2 hours 20 minutes.

Austria. Lech am Arlberg lies in Vorarlberg, the westernmost of the Austrian provinces. Zurich is in Switzerland, which is why the drive crosses a border at Diepoldsau — both countries are in Schengen and the crossing is normally a drive-through. Zurich is still the best-served airport for Lech.

Lech itself lies at 1,450 m, with Oberlech 300 m above it and Zürs at 1,717 m; the top of the ski area is the Madlochjoch, 2,438 m. Those altitudes, and the Arlberg’s position across the main weather divide, give Lech am Arlberg one of the most reliable snow records in the Alps. The season usually runs from early December to mid or late April.

Snow-sure alpine skiing at altitude, a village that has kept its own character, and hotels good enough to have put the village among the nine Best of the Alps resorts. It is among the best known and most popular resorts in Austria. It is the start and finish of Der Weisse Ring, the circuit linking Lech, Zürs, Zug and Oberlech, and it is where Austria’s first ski lift was built.

Lech is the main village at 1,450 m. Oberlech sits three hundred metres higher, at 1,750 m, on a sun plateau above it. The houses up in Oberlech are linked to one another by heated tunnels running beneath the ski slopes rather than by streets, and they are reached either by the cable car from the village or by the road that climbs to the Umschlaghalle.

They differ in size rather than in quality. Zürs is smaller and quieter — a handful of hotels at 1,717 m with the lifts starting at the door. Lech has the shops, the ski school and the evening life. One pass covers both and a piste links them, so the choice is about the kind of week you want. We drive to both.

On hotels and restaurants, generally yes: the accommodation in Lech sits a category higher. The skiing costs the same — one Ski Arlberg pass covers both villages and you can ski from one to the other. So does the transfer: both are 200 km from Zurich Airport and both start at €460 per vehicle.

It is one of Austria’s more expensive resorts and makes no secret of it — it belongs to that group of nine alpine resorts and the houses are graded accordingly. The skiing is not the expensive part: 300 km of pistes and 85 lifts, on the same pass that is sold in St. Anton. Our transfer is priced per vehicle rather than per seat, which is what makes it work for a family.

Not in the way St. Anton is. Lech is the quieter half of the Arlberg: the afternoon happens on the mountain, then at the Schneggarei where the piste meets the village, and at three small umbrella bars along the main road — the ice bar at the Tannbergerhof, the terrace at Pfefferkorn’s and the Krone down by the river. After that it moves indoors, into the hotel bars.

Yes. The sun plateau above Oberlech, around the Kriegerhorn and Petersboden, is wide, open cruising terrain where families spend the week, and the Skischule Lech has been teaching there since 1925. Child seats travel with our transfers free of charge, so nobody has to carry one through an airport.

The runs off the Schlegelkopf come straight back down into the village, so a first week needs no bus, and the 300 km on the pass hold far more gentle terrain than the Arlberg’s reputation for steep skiing suggests. The altitude helps as well: from 1,450 m up to 2,438 m, the snow holds from December into April.

Yes, and unusually so. There are 40 km of cleared winter walking paths, more than 27 km of free cross-country trails running from Lech through Zug into the Zugertal, a 1.2 km toboggan run from Oberlech down to the village that stays open until 21:00, the sport.park with its bowling lanes and library, and the Huber-Hus, a Walser house of 1590 on the Schlosskopfplatz. The cable cars take foot passengers.

In the village, yes. Nothing in the village is closed to traffic and there is no set-down point to walk in from, so you are taken to the entrance of your hotel, chalet or apartment at any hour. Oberlech is the exception, and how you arrive there depends on which house you are staying in.

Usually not, and most guests find it easier without one. The village bus links Lech, Oberlech, Zug and Stubenbach through the day, the cable car to Oberlech runs from 07:00 until 01:00, and once you are on the mountain a single pass carries you across the whole Arlberg. For the hours the bus does not cover — dinner, a late evening, the climb up to Oberlech — we run a local taxi.

No. The nearest stations are Langen am Arlberg and St. Anton am Arlberg, and Lech is about 20 km beyond either, over the Flexen. That last stretch is a bus or a car whichever way you arrive, which is why most guests booked into Lech settle the door-to-door leg before they fly.

Bludenz, at the foot of the Klostertal, is the nearest town of any size and the one our route passes on the climb up. Feldkirch and Bregenz are the nearest cities, both in Vorarlberg, and Innsbruck is the nearest large one. Zurich, 200 km away, is the nearest major airport.

Yes. Tap water throughout Austria is drinking water, and in Lech it comes off the mountain above the village. Fill a bottle in your room rather than buying one.

German. The local dialect is Walser, from the settlers who founded the village in the fourteenth century. In the hotels, the ski school and the lift offices, English is spoken as a matter of course.
