No. Swiss and Austrian road charges and the vignette are included, and the Flexen road carries no toll. Skis and snowboards travel free, child seats are free, and there is no night surcharge, no holiday surcharge and nothing added for luggage. The one exception is a detour you ask for — a supermarket on the way up, for instance. That is billed on the minutes it adds, and you hear the figure before we turn off.

A Mercedes E-Class, a Mercedes Minibus 4x4 and a VW Caravelle — our own cars, not a broker’s. Every one of them is modern, well maintained and all-wheel drive, and every one is driven by an experienced Arlberg driver, on winter tyres from November to April and carrying chains, which is what the last stage into Zürs asks for. Around 2 hours 15 minutes for the 195 km, in normal conditions — a direct alpine run with no changes on the way.

Two thirds of the private transfer is motorway: from the airport past Winterthur and St. Gallen, into Austria at Diepoldsau, up the Rhine valley and along the A14 and S16 to Bludenz. After Bludenz it is the Klostertal — Klösterle, then Langen, then Stuben — and at Alpe Rauz the L198 branches north, threads the galleries and finishes at 1,717 m.

None. Traffic bound for the Tirol side goes through the Arlberg Tunnel and pays for it; we leave the main road before the portal and climb instead. The Flexen road itself is free.

It is a mountain road, narrow in places, with half-open galleries cut into the rock face and snow on it for months. It is also the only road into Zürs, which is why we drive it in four-wheel-drive vehicles on winter tyres and why the driver on it is an experienced local who is familiar with it from daily use rather than from a map.

Yes. We drive directly to your hotel, chalet or apartment in Zürs, which makes the last part of an alpine journey a seamless one. Unlike Oberlech there is no gondola to transfer to and no luggage handover on the way, and no part of the village is closed to us — the car stops outside the building you are staying in.

For transfers from Zürs to Zurich Airport we normally recommend collecting you about five hours before your scheduled departure. That allows for the drive itself, for winter conditions on the mountain section, and for roughly two hours at the airport to check in ski luggage and clear security. After heavy snowfall we may suggest setting off earlier, and we will tell you in good time if we do.

Not the whole way — Zürs has no railway station. From Zurich Airport the train will take you to Langen am Arlberg or to St. Anton am Arlberg, and the mountain stretch that is left is covered by regional bus or by taxi.

For one or two people travelling light, usually yes, and we would rather say so. Load up with cases, ski bags or small children and it turns into two or three changes carrying the lot, and what you saved goes back out again on the final leg.

A hire car gives you complete independence and asks more of you in winter. The catch is the top of the drive. Snow on the Flexen road behaves nothing like snow on an autobahn, and then the car has to stand somewhere for six days — which it will, because the lifts start in the village and you will not touch it until you leave.

Innsbruck is the closest major airport to Zürs. Zurich usually offers the wider choice of international flights, and Munich is a useful third when the schedules or the fares out of your own city are better. We drive private transfers to Zürs from all three, and from Friedrichshafen, Memmingen and St. Gallen–Altenrhein. Wherever you land, the final climb is the same one, because only the Flexen road reaches Zürs.

It is one of the most convenient on the Arlberg, which is part of why a private transfer to the door works so well here. The cable cars rise from the village itself rather than from a base station outside it, and many of the hotels stand on or beside the piste, so most guests get through a week without a car or a ski bus.

Seekopf, Zürsersee, Trittkopf and Hexenboden leave from the village itself. The Flexenbahn, running since 2016/17, joins the village to Alpe Rauz and Stuben; before it existed, reaching the Tirol side meant a bus, and now it does not.

A loop of six descents and as many lifts — 22 km of skiing, 5,500 metres of drop — that runs Zürs, Zug, Oberlech, Lech and home again. Because the village lies on the circuit you can pick it up outside your hotel. The other classic from here tops the Madlochjoch at 2,438 m before dropping to Zug.

Yes, though it is not St. Anton. Afternoons belong to the terraces where the pistes come out at the houses; later on it goes indoors, to one of the village’s two clubs, Vernissage and the Zürserl. Up on the pass at 1,773 m the Flexenhäusl runs late, and it is small enough that tables are booked a long way ahead.

The road is what changes: the stretch beyond Lech towards Warth, closed from November to April, is passable again and runs on into the Bregenzerwald, and the pass fills with road bikes and motorcycles instead of snow.
